DJ Nicco's Background

How It Started

For DJ Nicco, it’s about connection–humans have the innate desire to connect with people, and playing music is the universal language. He believes it’s not about playing random songs. Instead, it’s about playing a song, evaluating its impact, and then preparing for the next song. It’s beautiful to see people’s engagement and help them to remain involved.
His friends and family describe him as a people person. He enjoys talking to others, and music creates an excellent opportunity to communicate. Nicco was born and spent most of his early childhood in Jamaica. Growing up in a vibrant music culture, with exposure to artists such as Bob Marley, Peter Tosh, and Bunny Wailer, helped foster Nicco’s love of music. Throughout his childhood, he was always looking for ways to learn more about music. Whether it was through DJ battles, presenting or DJing his songs, Nicco was eager to be involved with music.

Meet DJ Nicco

How it's Going!

In the mid 90s, DJ Nicco migrated to the US. Overwhelmed by the move to a big city with diverse cultures, different food, and a busy lifestyle, his music was a blessing in disguise. Not only could he learn more about others through interpersonal interactions, but he also had access to a diverse collection of music now. DJ Nicco was ecstatic when he realized the number of stations on the radio. He couldn’t just listen to reggae music but there was latin, soca, hip-hop, country, and rock, too. If he wanted to hear it, there was a station for it. Soon enough, he started collecting music and visiting music stores on the weekends to sort through records and listen to CDs and vinyl records.
He started as a DJ while in college in Upstate NY. His Friday evenings were spent helping friends on their weekly radio show. He remembered feeling thrilled and energized after the show, and this was when he decided to help others be happy through music.
Soon after, DJ Nicco started playing at clubs in Upstate NY. He then moved to Vermont and continued to work in the club scene. Pleased with the music, and thinking about others and their access to music, DJ Nicco decided he wanted others to have a chance to connect with his music in other areas, not just clubs, thus sparking his interest in becoming a Mobile DJ.
